Islam's clean bill of mental health

The following graph shows the percentages of GSS respondents, by religious affiliation, who report having experienced poor mental health ("stress, depression, and problems with emotions") in the last thirty days (N = 7,088):

Funny that Buddhists--practitioners of a philosophy which is kind of like Stoicism but without an engagement in worldly affairs--appear to have the worst mental health of all. What are they stressing out about? Hey, nobody said achieving nirvana was easy!

We may think the exploding Muhammads are crazy. They're not. They have a more determined sense of purpose than we do.

Was the impetus to investigate this question my suspicion that Jewish neuroticism would starkly manifest itself? You can't prove anything! Anyway, that's not what this reveals.

Women tend to have poorer mental health than men. That holds all religious affiliations here. The sex disparity among Jews is stark, though. The following graph shows the difference between men and women by affiliation (percentage of men experiencing poor mental health subtracted from the percentage of women experiencing poor mental health):

While 66% of Jewish women experience poor mental health, just 36% of Jewish men do. The Jewish sample size is only 170, so maybe the gender divide is attributable to that. Maybe.

GSS variables used: MNTLHLTH(0)(1-30), RELIG(1,2,3,4,6,9), RACECEN1(1), HISPANIC(1), SEX

Re Buddhists: that's probably because there are vanishingly few real Buddhists in America, and those who become sorta-modern-fusion-Buddhists do so because of mental health issues.

Bit of a misleading Y-axis, no?

What are the numbers for mental health broken down by IQ, and by race, sex and IQ? I suspect the Islam number may be an artifact of low IQ.

Candide III -

We have many East Asians, so while it may've been true 30 years ago, nowadays we almost certainly have more than "vanishingly few real Buddhists." That said we have enough New Age-type Buddhists that the crazy could be coming entirely from them.

AE, Candide III -

What are the numbers for Asian vs non-Asian Buddhists?

This observation seems correct, second part anyway:

"I would not be surprised if neurotic Westerners are more likely to become Buddhists."

My impression is that US Muslims are relatively high quality - mostly conservative, upper middle class material (a group that is usually very mentally balanced).

Possibly European Muslims will be more unbalanced.

AE,

Blue-check mark Jews seem to be disproportionately female. Jewish men on the whole are far less of a problem than Jewesses.

akarlin,

I had a Pakistani supervisor as a job. I can say unironically that he was a wonderful man. Very devout but was a Sufi Muslim. Very pro-American Republican too.

I wouldn't want Western countries innundated with Pakistani immigrants but there are some very good people among them.

Candide III,

Buddhism in America is generally presented as a way to help clear up and resolve negative emotions and psychological complexes. Asian Buddhists are more representative of the general population, but white Buddhists probably do have disproportionately high emotional health problems.

After revealing her deepest innermost feelings and desires, Deidre realized that life as a boring housewife was actually unfulfilling. She had sex with her therapist, who passed her to his friends and started a whole new life as a sex worker with a non-racist pimp.
The Fraudian Skool of Psychobabble. Psycho-Babylon dudes.

I expect the Muslim Mental Illness is based on unscience-rific beliefs in Higher Powers and the Authoritarian Personality of not Trusting Jews.

What I find totally astounding about this is that the percentages for all religions are so high. These figures are for those who claim to have experienced mental problems in the last thirty days, not thirty years! Where did they conduct this survey? In a loony bin?

Candide III,

Plausible. The Buddhist breakdown is 40% white, 55% Asian, 5% other. New-age leftists--the white Buddhists--tend towards relatively poor mental health.

Snorlax,

For consistency in approach, I let the program I'm using--Excel before, google docs now--determine the y-axis range.

The sample sizes for non-Christians with a religious affiliation are too small to slice up further. One-third of the Muslim respondents are black. There's a reason no stereotype of the depressive, neurotic black man exists. Quite the opposite. Blacks tend to have good mental health, high self-esteem, low levels of depression and neuroticism and suicide, etc. It's another reason Marxist explanations about class utterly fail--based on SES, blacks should have all kinds of mental problems that they don't have.

Sid,

Is there anything more archetypically neurotic than a childless blue-checkmarked Jewess? Rhetorical.

As a self-described Stoic, I'm interested in Buddhism (though I think Stoicism is superior to Buddhism both individually and societally). My anecdotal experience has been that Westerners who naturally fit Buddhist ideals tend towards stoicism, while the unstable nuttier types who are attracted to the ideal but who are not naturally inclined towards it gravitate to Buddhism. That fits my personal experience. Stoicism provides a framework that fits my natural predilections.

One reason I've been able to punch above my weight to some degree in my personal life is because I've never had any mental health problems, not even of the most mild variety. I cannot recall ever feeling depressed and have always scored very low on neuroticism in big five personality tests. I think people who are attracted to Buddhism have probably had the opposite experience.

Jonathan,

Believing in God is good for mental health. Yeah, I know I'm assuming a lot about causality.

Anon,

Well, the bar is pretty low. The question isn't asking about clinically diagnosed poor mental health, just whether or not respondents have recently experienced debilitating stress, depression, and other emotional problems.

Some people don't want to be saved. 94% of the urban women want to replace the native male population with foreigners. That is the array of cultural power organized against the Right.

There's Mental Health, and then there is what Psychiatrists say. Its quite different really. Ziggy Fraud's "theories" about "sexual repression" causing "Hysteria". Have you ever really read this clown's book on this "theory". I had the misfortune of reading this while rather young. Its part of The Great Books of the Western World series. This book is like "Penthouse Letters". Its not a Psychology Book AT ALL. Its NOTHING but women's sexual fantasies.
This explains a lot about hokey "psychoanalysis". The feel-good crapola you see everywhere about "talking about your feelings". I know a lot about human nature and psychology. This guy Ziggy Fraud is EXACTLY like the quacks on TV nowadays.
The whole field is now Upside Down. Anything religious or White is seen as suspect. An "Authoritarian Personality" like Hitler. You just KNEW the Bohemian Corporal was in there somewhere didn't you?
People who are "uptight", or otherwise known as RESPONSIBLE, are so "repressed". The more "open and carefree" people like homosexuals, blacks and Jews that are UNCONSTRAINED by MORALS, LAWS, RULES, and nasty things like "Religiosity". People replete with "Religiosity" with their "hang-ups" and "repression" violate the more "self actualized" and "care-free" existence of Naked Savages living in the State of Perpetual Innocence now known as DINDU NUFFIN.

DSM-V is NOT EVEN SCIENCE. Its Frankfurt School of Marxism.

Haha, only 66 percent of Jewish women? That’s a very conservative estimate, from unfortunate personal experience. I suspect it is better in Israel though, for various reasons. As far as Muslim percentage, I doubt that these communities are fully comfortable with western model of mental health. Lots of inner policing and healing, even among upper SES.

"They have a more determined sense of purpose than we do."

Affirmative to the question, 'Have you ever thought about killing someone', might be thought indicative of instability in Normal folk. For the Religion of Peace, it's just baked into the pie.

Lance E said...

Does it really matter that the Exploding Muhammads self-report good mental health when they, you know, explode? I'll take facts over feels.

I'm guessing there's also a sampling bias, since the exploding ones probably don't respond to the GSS (especially after they've exploded).

Peter Kolding said...

The disparities are interesting, but all the groups - with the exception of Muslims - are culturally feminist. A far more relevant study (IMHO) would be an analysis of mental health in relation to the demands of the dominant culture.

216,

That's a staggering difference between older women and urban (i.e. young, or at least a subset of young) women. Some of that is probably accounted for by the overrepresentation of non-Swedes in Swedish urban areas, but it's still huge.

Jonathan,

Homosexuality used to be a mental disorder but nicotine addiction was not.

Now nicotine addiction is but homosexuality is not.

But don't worry, the psychologically unstable psychologists and psychiatrists behind Current Year DSM are experts. They know what they're doing!

Winston,

The jokes write themselves because there's a lot of truth to them.

APL/Lance E,

Read it how you will, but I'm not attempting a normative judgment here, just a clinical one. If genuine psychopath was a category, the bar would probably be all the way down to the floor, with almost all of them saying they have no problems with stress, depression, or emotional problems!

Aeoli said...

Dude, every single Somalian is Muslim, every one of them is out of their mind, and not one of them would self-report it. This is bad data.

Kipling said...

I'd argue this would be more "how much status do you get for claiming to suffer from mental health issues" than "mental health issues". So yet another Pozometer. Most people suffer from depression ever now and then, but it seems like real genuine medical there's-something-wrong-with-my-dopamine disorders bump around in 1-2% marks for both bipolar and depression, and those are going to be unmovable. The switch from "I'm depressed" to "I have Depression" tells us a lot about the signaling pressures.

Maciano Van der Laan said...

I would define a sincere muslim insane by definition.

Audacious Epigone said...

Aeoli/Kipling/Maciano,

Agree. This isn't a clinical diagnosis--probably more a proxy measure of who is the most secure in and comfortable with who they are. Like I said earlier, genuine psychopaths likely look like they have very good mental health by this measure.

The percentage of Buddhists is explained by the fact that people with problems like despression and anxiety seek practices like meditation that can alleviate symptoms. Some of them go all the way and become Buddhists. So causality goes the other way.
