Canadian proximity privilege

In this week's edition of The Z Blog Power Hour, Z riffs off Moynihan's Law of the Canadian Border, noting that the closer a state is to our northern neighbor, the more its residents tend to blather on about things like racism and white privilege.

From Google Trends, the top ten US states by percentage of search volume for "white privilege" are as follows:

1) Vermont
2) New Hampshire
3) Washington
4) Wisconsin
5) Rhode Island
6) Minnesota
7) Michigan
8) District of Columbia
9) Iowa
10) Massachusetts

Z's perspicacity is par for the course.

There are a few sparsely populated north central states for which results are not available because the total number of searches aren't high enough to register in the Trends formula, and there are some other states like Maine, Alaska, North Dakota, and Idaho that buck the trend.

This is surely because large percentages of these states' populations are comprised of blue-collar, working-class whites who lack the self-awareness to grasp just how privileged they are. Plowing and digging through the windswept heath while being battered by the elements is a lot cushier than an administrative position at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. After all, only 26% of Idahoans have a college degree, while 41% of Massachusettsans do!

Exemplifying this countertrend is West Virginia. Mountaineers come in dead last among those with sufficient search data to be included in the ranking.

The Upper Midwest, New England, and WA state all have "better" (as measured by incarceration rates, fiduciary responsibility, etc.) whites than do many of the states that are further South. Still, MI being in the top 10 surprised me a bit because I've had the impression that MI has a lot of Eminem/ICP type prole whites.

Also, the upper Midwest has abysmal blacks, and I'm sure that a lot of whites in this region feel guilty about it. It's not like the Deep South where higher quality blacks and middling quality whites don't have as much neurosis about race relations.

The absence of Mid-Atlantic states (not counting the shit-lib paradise of D.C.) tells me that a lot of whites in that region, in contrast to their Good Liberal repuations, actually are fairly blunt and non-nonsense in their assessment of race relations. It's just that many of them would never, in a million years, openly admit to their peers that they share racial views in line with the South.

That's what Z notes in the podcast. He says that in white liberals in cities like Baltimore simply don't talk about race. It's just a background feature of their environment and they behave accordingly, but they don't discuss it.

I grew up in the Upper Midwest and am not surprised by the results. I think a lot of it has to do with the type of people who live there. The Upper Midwest has a lot of German, Scandinavian, and Dutch descendants. Their European counterparts tend to have some of the strongest social democratic states and a lot of that translates over here in the US. Like their European counterparts, most of them love the idea of diversity and are actively trying to diversify (read: ruin), primarily through Catholic and Lutheran charities. It's going about as well here as it is in Europe.

A lot of these small towns have never had to deal with diversity problems like rape, gangs, etc. It's really throwing them off as they try to solve the problem while refusing to look at the cause. I once asked a Dutch farmer a couple years ago what he felt about a drug and gang related killing at a nearby town despite only having about 1,000 people. He went on a long drag about how it's all social issues and how the schools are failing these kids. They have a strong work ethic and can't imagine their new Sudanese neighbors wouldn't feel the same way, especially with all the opportunities in America. Dat magic dirt.

AE,

Washington State has a high percentage of whites, and they are divided between do-gooder Scandinuvians (not a typo, trust me) and rabid SJWs.

In contrast, Idaho is notorious for being extremely white and a haven for whites who explicitly dislike blacks. I had a professor whose brother was a doctor, did his residency in a highly black part of the South, snapped, and then went to Idaho.

IHTG,

I studied in Boston for a couple of years. The SWPLs in Boston are just as insufferable as anywhere else, but there are lots of proles there who are not politically correct in the slightest. One time I got into an Uber and the driver said he was relieved he was driving me and not the black guy over in the corner.

Random Dude,

In most parts of the country, you have prole whites who are more open and honest about race, and then you have SWPLs who either fool themselves into believing egalitarianism, or simply don't bring up the matter if you live near uber ghettos like Detroit or Baltimore.

But the kind of Upper Midwest whites (and a lot of them live in Washington State) combine qualities of prole and SWPL whites from other places. They combine the earthiness and manual labor skills of proles with the high mindedness and naivete of SWPLs.

Because of this they're some of the toughest people to persuade on race realism. In general, SWPLs at least feel cognitive dissonance if you expose them to enough NAM misbehavior, but Upper Midwest Germanics just assume that white racism must be THAT BAD if blacks will act that way.

You see that mindset in northern Germany and Sweden today. Oh, if the migrants are behaving this poorly, then we just need to censor ourselves on Facebook that much harder!

Sid,

That's a great description of what John Derbyshire pithily refers to as "Midwestern Nice". It's not the haughty, condescending 'compassion' of coastal elites, it's magnanimity of the most genuine sort in the world. Great in a society where social reciprocity is the norm. Totally defenseless against aggressive outside groups willing to exploit it.

The until very recently lightly populated Western states (e.g. Mountain states and Alaska) score poorly on measures of happiness/stress. There's a tremendous lack of any kind of enduring settlement/culture, aside from a handful of places. What's more, when these regions were more rural and lightly populated back in say, the pre-1990's, they scored out as fairly conservative on the GSS. Now that lotsa outsiders have wandered into these places and built McMansions, or piled into now trendy large metro areas of the region, each successive GSS records the Mountain West as being more liberal, with Millennials from the Mountain states being not terribly unlike Pacific state Millennials. Millennials (the white ones) from the Northeast, Midwest, South, and Pacific aren't all that different from the older inhabitants of these regions, but the same cannot be said of the Mountain region.

Now, RDI is onto something when he mentions neurotic/anti-social people moving "to the middle of nowhere" in the Mountain states. I'm sure guys like Jared Taylor are furious that demographics are changing, and are fed up with Millennial culture, but there's no law that dictates that you should throw your hands up and give up on your turf. Back in the 70's/80's, it wasn't unheard of for Mid-Atlantic whites to patrol their neighborhoods and chase out/beat up unwelcome dark interlopers. Would you rather stick up for your friends, or pull a Ted Kaczynski and be a crazy ascetic?

I heard a podcast with a late 70's born SJW douche/Cali refugee who's lived in the Mountain states for several years. Even though he once lived in Lefty ground zero (Cali), God knows he'll never admit why he left the state.

Every region of America has a lot of Brit/Irish ancestry, too. The British Midland culture (and the farmland) is what attracted Nordics to the Midwest.

It makes no sense to blame the average person in these region for globalist follies. Southern white proles never wanted blacks on their turf, but who gets to settle in our country has never been determined by lower class people. Decadent rich people don't a give damn about the natives in any country. It's all greed and exploitation.

Only a small handful of do gooder Boomers and Millennials in America consciously want more diversity. The progressively bigger and stupider waves of immigration into America since the early 70's are basically treated like random events, acts of God, basically, by most natives as most natives feel no compelling reason to share more of their turf with the ultimate strangers. Now unfortunately, many natives don't do the math as to why these people are here and who ultimately pulled those strings. It's just not in the cards for countries settled by Teutonics to be clannish enough to immediately identify the traitor and tar and feather him. Being responsible for much of Nazi ideology certainly has not done us any favors, nor has letting the enemies of the Nazis (the Jews) attain great money, power, and esteem over the last 70 years.

Believe it or not, even the MPLS Star Tribune often censors and pulls comments from articles dealing with refugees and Islam. Even the Upper Midwest now has sizable number of woke Boomers/X-ers who want to remind everyone about the racket going on. Elites since Brexit and Trump have been genuinely concerned about the degree of support for "radical" ideas like keeping out foreign nationals who originate from countries known to be hostile towards America. Right now the elites are counting on clueless GOP economic policies being enough to alienate white proles from voting for the GOP in up coming elections......And they probably can feel confident that'll happen unless the Stupid Party stops trying to relive the Reagan era.

What's (justifiably) irritating to Southerners is that whites and blacks get along better in the South than in any other region, but this is seldom acknowledged by Yankees. Northerners (esp. in the Northeast) often have the gall to deride the South for it's history of racism, it's cruelty, it's ignorance etc. And people are rarely if ever informed about class and labor issues WRT American blacks. Blacks were brought here by decadent and lazy upper class whites who needed laborers. It's not as though the average white person wanted to be around to black people in order to just pick on them.

What do you think of the "nobody asked us" campaign? I like it.

Jayman,

Indeed.

Feryl said...

"How did Iowa get in there?"

Iowa is almost identical to Minnesota, in terms of white ethnicity. Iowa, MN, and Wisconsin have a lot of Nordic ancestry, and Teutonic/Midlands Brit ancestry, but very little DNA from clannish whites (Scots-Irish, Catholic Irish, Italians, Jews, etc.). It's a big reason we're so darn nice and unpretentious.

The Midwest, South, and Western US have so much Teutonic and Scots-Irish DNA that other kinds of whites who settle here for many generations end up being absorbed into the dominant strains. In much of New England and the Mid-Altantic, Catholic whites and Jews utterly overwhelmed the original Brit Protestant and Dutch stock. Some of the genetic change was softened by Germans making their mark, but the average white person in the Northeast, generally speaking, has less biologically in common with the original colonialists than do whites in other parts of America.

My mom's sister did an ancestry test. I didn't see the chart, but it did evidently say that she was 35+% Brit/"Irish", 25+% Scandinavian, and 20+% German/French.

Iowa's whites are relatively leftist. According to exit polls, they were the only whites outside of the Northeast or the West Coast to vote for Obama over Romney (see the fourth map in this post).

Iowa is as culturally conservative as anywhere else in the Midwest. But I suspect that Nice White Lady types (and the men around whom they live) were anxious to see Obama as their black BFF. Party loyalty explains the Northeast and West Coast (they'd have voted for virtually anyone on the Dem ticket back then, Obama included). But Iowa is both extremely Nordic/puritan, and is more rural/less diverse than Minnesota or Wisconsin (Gen X-ers in MN and WI grew up in a time where large sections of Minneapolis/St. Paul/Milwaukee were very dark and dangerous). Before the 1980's and certainly before the 1970's MN and WI were extremely white. Before the 1980's basically every suburb of Mpls/St. Paul was all white. But growing numbers of black/foreigner arrivals and births rapidly darkened a couple of suburbs by the early 90's. I suspect that white Gen X and Millennials in the Upper Midwest have already started or are going to start following the racial views that are common among whites in the Mid-Atlantic and Lower Midwest. Thus far it seems that only the Northern inter mountain West states and Northern New England are capable of maintaining white demographics that resemble the 1970's. Boomers in the Northern US seem to be less cognizant of what's going (brain plasticity being what it is), not that they all are totally clueless or anything.

A prolish family on my block, in the Minneapolis suburbs of the early 1990's, had a mom who printed out "N***er hunting licenses" as a joke. This was the time when MPLS had some of the highest per capita murder rates in the country. My late Boomer dad drove a cab in and round the cities in the 80's and got some real education when he was in his 20's (his upbringing was in an all white county away from the cities). But he still makes excuses for black behavior, remember that Boomers tend to be fascinated by blacks and seldom do they want to give up on them.
