Trumping the rest of the field

We're told from as early as elementary school that voting is our civic duty. The Establishment collectively laments low voter turnout. Outfits like Rock the Vote don't have any specific interest in increasing voter participation rates because the most marginally committed voters tend to vote for the left, of course! No, no, they just want to make sure everybody exercises said civic duty!

Well then, Donald Trump should surely be receiving kudos far and wide for increasing public interest in the 2016 election cycle so much. The following graph shows Google search inputs for the five--Google Trends' maximum number of terms that can be gauged simultaneously--most queried presidential aspirants over the last few months:

This isn't a measure of news story mentions or opinion polling outcomes, it's a measure of search terms inputted by Google users across the US. People want to read, hear, and talk about Trump. He creates more interest than the rest of the field by a long shot. On the Republican side, Donald Trump has garnered more searches than the other 15 GOP presidential candidates combined have over the last three months. And it's not as though there is non-political celebrity noise artificially boosting the apparent level of interest in Trump here, either. As the graph shows, prior to his announcement that he was running, he didn't generate any search interest at all.

The Republican party is undeservedly fortunate to be able to attach its name to Trump, not the other way around.

Parenthetically, I realize that devoting so much space to the painful dog and pony shows that are US presidential elections may strike many as an unworthy use of their time and mine, but the Trump phenomenon is the most exciting thing that has happened in American politics in my lifetime. Here we have a guy who has made halting illegal immigration and deporting illegals in the US the policy cornerstone of his presidential campaign and has made dissipating the suffocating cloud of political correctness the animating spirit of that same campaign, and he's dominating the political discussion in the process. It's worth paying attention to if ever a political development was.

I find it really interesting how the ones who do not like Trump are the ones that are way behind the pack! Then you have those far left Libs, who thinks he is off his rocker, thinks he is just blowing hot air and cannot do what he is saying he will do! But everything he is saying is doable! Hell, anybody with common sense can figure that out! Its not rocket science! Hear is a little secret for all you Libs out there, He is the only one who has the guts to stand up for the America people, you know those to elected you to take care of our country and dismantle everything this country was founded on! He is a quote from Admiral Yamamoto asked about attacking Pearl Harbor! He said that "We have awakened a sleeping giant!" That is exactly what Trump did! The Tea Party crowd has had enough of the same old tired politics, lying ass politicians who have every lobbyist known to man in their back pockets, promise one thing and do another way of business elected officials, no backbone, money grubbing, greedy and not doing what they were elected to do, Congressmen/women and Senators. We are done with you and pink slips are coming soon because your sorry asses are FIRED!!!!!!!!

I might search for a train wreck. Doesn't mean I want to be in one. While I have a generally favorable opinion of Trump, not everyone who searches for him wants to vote for him. Though people are talking about him. I will admit though I'm happy Trump got in the race. Before he did it was just about a given that either Christie or Bush would have gotten the nod. Because everyone was playing to the middle. They were too busy trying to out-moderate the next guy. Trump got in and they saw that people actually LIKED someone not filtering his comments through political correctness, and boom everyone started being Republican again...

Thomas,

That can't be enough to come close to being the primary reason for the explosion of interest. His popularity is, if anything, incrementally increasing over time, so the more coherent explanation is that as people go looking, they tend to like what they find.

As a non-American, do find the "Make America Great Again" rhetoric odd. As a country its about as powerful relative to China and Europe as I'd ever expect it to be. Esp. Given the American personality. Its still the favoured choice for international brains to attend uni and launch startups and run its banks. Incomes and mil spending are as relatively high as they can be compared to others. It has the glamour that surrounds those and large, rich internal market to fuel worldwide entertainment success. What do you guys expect? Keeping prosperity and controlling migration, sure, but the rhetoric of the US being fallen from the zenith of its power and influence, no way. Its s good as its gonna get for you guys.
