Adrian Peterson

Tapping the GSS from 2000 onward for contemporary relevance, the percentage of black men who agree/strongly agree that there are times when it is necessary to discipline a child with a "good, hard spanking": 86.4%. The percentage of white liberals who concur is 52.3%, and among liberal white women is just 47.4%. Among conservative whites, the figure is 80.9%.

Like Michael Vick and dog fighting, this is another pop culture illustration of the Black Rednecks and White Liberals phenomenon in action.

I was listening to a podcast the other day where Jack Donovan remarked in passing that so much of the airtime surrounding the NFL doesn't have anything to do with the game of football. Instead, it is devoted to a set of mixed gender 'analysts' gossiping about the personal lives of players. Women buy Tostitos, too, after all!

Parenthetically, here's some deeper delving into attitudes on spanking from a few years ago.

GSS variables used: RACECEN1(1)(2), POLVIEWS(1-2)(6-7), SEX, YEAR(2000-2012)

My dad spanked us as kids, but ALWAYS in control.

Peterson whipped and beat a four year old boy, then bragged about it afterward, as if he'd just gone 99 for the touchdown. That is not spanking, nor is it discipline. It's an out-of-control ego/psyche taking out its frustations on the back of a little kid. And demographics has nothing to do with that.

That sounds right and is exactly in line with Peterson's history, though there is a racially-influenced spectrum of what is considered acceptable behavior towards children and blacks are consequently going to see this as less extreme than whites are, most especially female SWPLs.

The NFL will not exist in ten years. Anheuser-Busch has already laid a mild threat of pulling their money and product out of stadiums, the raddison hotel suspended their contract with the Vikings, Rhiannon had her music pulled off of cbs during NFL games as they have the ravens on their tv contract. Heads are gonna roll this year...

That seems like an easier fix to me than the head trauma/later life issues that a whole host of players suffer from and will increasingly come to suffer from in the future without some as of yet to be articulated structural change to the way the game is played.

A consequence of the feminization of the culture surrounding major league sports means that badboys have to be publicly pilloried for being badboys. That can be done with a pretty marginal impact on the actual game itself. It's sideshow stuff.

Alternatively, it might be nice cover for businesses like Anheuser that have been dropping so much money into something that may not really be delivering effective monetary returns to step down from their perches, though.

I find it stunning that the right is falling over themselves to support these high paid thugs. For Libertarian thinkers, I believe this is another opportunity to highlight the violent culture that brews in the inner city. I don't see a difference between Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Adrian Peterson et al. This is a symptom of the breakdown in parenthood in the hood. Hannity and Limbaugh rushing to the defense of these players is bizarre, it contradicts the moral, cultural high ground which is there purview. Its not about spanking, don't forget a woman was punched in an elevator. If anything, that is the war on women in true sense of the phrase.

I find it kind of odd. Black children are more likely to get spanked than any other demographic of children in the USA. And spanking is viewed as the norm. One would think, given the idea that spanking is about discipline, that Black children would be the most well-behaved. Oddly enough, Black men make up half of the prison population. Black men are murdering one another in high rates. One would think that with the amount of spanking in the Black population, the opposite would take place.
