More on the myth of Hispanic social conservatism

From the Pew Research Center comes more evidence that the open borders Republicans' nonsense about Hispanics being natural Republicans because of their putative "family values" social conservatism is just that, nonsense.

Pew conducted a survey earlier this year in which respondents were queried about their positions on seven areas of contemporary change in family structure that has occurred in the US over the last several decades. The seven are "more single women having children without a male partner to help raise them", "more unmarried couples raising children", "more gay and lesbian couples raising children", "more people living together without getting married", "more mothers of young children working outside the home", "more people of different races marrying each other", and "more women not ever having children". Respondents rated each of the items as being "good for society", "bad for society", or "makes no difference".

From the responses, Pew categorized participants into three groups of roughly equal size ("accepters", "skeptics", and "rejecters"). Accepters were the most likely to render the changes as being good for society and rejecters the most likely to render them bad for society, while skeptics fell in between.

The following table displays a progressive index for various demographic groupings, computed by simply taking the percentage of each group classified as accepters and subtracting from that the percentage of the group classified as rejecters. Thus, the higher the value, the more progressive that group is:

Marital status

Political affiliation

Electoral status

Registered voter
Church attendance

Monthly or less

Hispanics hold far more 'progressive' views on the breakdown of the traditional nuclear family than blacks and whites do. Who would've thought blacks are even more natural Republicans than Hispanics are?! Hispanics are even slightly more progressive than self-described Democrats and those under the age of 30 are. Only the irreligious are more libertine in their views on the state of the family in contemporary America than Hispanics are.

The other results come as little surprise, meshing well with conventional wisdom, with a couple possible exceptions in the sex and registered voters gaps. After all, it's women who are said to suffer more from single parenthood, hence the recourse available to women through the legal system to force absent fathers to transfer resources to them. Regarding registered voters being more traditional than the population at large, it's yet another reason I'm an opponent of universal suffrage.

Okay, that's it. We need a constitutional amendment to raise the voting age to 50.

I think I remember the conventional wisdom 35 years ago was that women (in the UK - this was) were more conservative than men; men more 'progressive'than women.

Maybe this 'fact' was wrong, or maybe women have changed. If it *has* changed this would be consistent with the idea that progressivism has become feminized, and that this is an agent of social destruction.

Any data on this?

@ bgc

The questions read like a test of credulity. Basically the women and the young believe the media propaganda. If you define going along with what is popular as conservative, then the women and the young are the most conservative and the men are the most 'liberal' in the sense of free thinking vs. going along with the current mass media propaganda. Also, the current media propaganda caters to the egos of women and the young by depicting them positively as good, wise and responsible. So it is understandable that they would respond to such flattery.

Leftism seeks to feminize and emasculate its enemies and to make virile its own constituencies. What's more, it has succeeded.

Look at the rioting in England. The so-called authorities, whites and the aged are rendered supine and vulnerable and are discouraged from taking action against the savages in the streets. The young and the black, meanwhile, are evermore painted as victims and thus implicitly encouraged to continue acting barbarically, or in some sense, in a masculine manner. This is a microcosm of what the Left has done to Western society.

The GSS only goes back into the 70s, but even extending back nearly four decades, women consistently self-describe as more politically liberal than men do. I like silly girl's explanation.

Sadly, the first picture displayed in this article 'artfully' symbolizes the phenomenon you're describing.

Well AE, I hope that white (and Asian) Americans are paying close attention to the images coming out of England as well as the flash mob phenomenon here in the US. If they are, there may be some small chance that we will awaken to the realities of the black race and its disposition toward the rest of us. We might then get a cultural sea change with attendant policy modulation as well. I'm not hopeful, however.

Pakistanis and Indians Jailed for Starting Birmingham Riots

John Derbyshire estimates that blacks comprise about 2% of the British population but 60 - 70% of the rioters.

I think men become more attracted to left wing politics only when they give an excuse for fighting (against injustice) and are about enabling them to have wild experiences that would not be permitted under a more conservative regime (mainly sexual promiscuity). Or where the men are poor and leftism promises them status they can use to attract mates and look good. None of these are currently very strong factors in leftism in the West (maybe they haven't ever been and couldn't ever be).
